UVM students visited our 3rd graders to explore watersheds with Waterways Stage, which combines the power of the performing arts with the joy of scientific investigation to engage students in their local watersheds. The program collaborates with expert educators from Very Merry Theatre, ECHO, Leahy Center, and Lake Champlain Sea Grant to research and perform original plays on a pressing water quality issue. This work will continue throughout the year.

Ms. Lawver’s Kindergarteners are learning all about clouds and got to watch clouds being made in the classroom!  Ms. Martin’s class made applesauce and did observations of apples using  their 5 senses.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you can see from the pictures above, our science learning is very engaging for MES students.  In other classes, we have seen experiments with pumpkins, Farm to School activities, explorations of rocks, soils, and minerals, experiments with 3 states of matter, with, of course, reading and writing skills incorporated throughout these activities.  These hands-on activities are the kinds of experiences students enjoy and remember. Ask your child what they are learning in science class, Farm to School, or ECO.

I had the pleasure to participate in a “Portrait of a Graduate” work session a couple of weeks ago.  This year-long collaborative effort, facilitated by Up For Learning, is being spear-headed by a dedicated group of students from all 7 LSUU schools, teachers, administrators, and School Board members.  Our mission right now is just to gather data from our community stakeholders on your thoughts about what you hope and envision for our graduates.  Please take a minute to fill out this 1 question survey to express your ideas.

P.U.P.S. Claussen’s Fundraiser: Be sure to check your child’s backpack for the order form.  Get your holiday plants, and support our parent organization.  The earnings go towards pizza and supplies for our free community events. Movie nights and sledding party coming soon!  Order forms are due back at school by this Friday, 11/18.

Parent Advisory Meeting:

This first meeting with the Principal will take place on Thursday, 11/17/22, 5:30 in the MES library.  Some agenda items could include, budgeting decisions (what do you want for our school), Portrait of a Graduate (what do you want for our students), grant funding decisions, after school enrichment ideas, school safety, and anything else that comes up from the group.

Mastery Report FAQ

This year, the district has updated the mastery report to provide more clarity to families about how their students are progressing in their learning. The mastery report will look different this year, the color coding has been removed, we have shifted to a four point scale, and there are now individual student narratives on the report. We received feedback from families that they really wanted to read more personal information about how their child was doing and what they needed to work on. For more information about the mastery report, please view this sample (it’s for SES, but the MES card will look similar) and FAQ document for families.

Coming soon to this newsletter: tips from our school counselors and behavioral experts on language and strategies you can use with your children at home that match the language we use at school for regulating emotions, social skills training, managing big feelings, dealing with anxiety, and more. Parents, tell us what you are interested in learning about. Send your inquiries or ideas to Lindsey Waldman, school counselor, at lindsey.waldman@lsuu.org .
