As you may have heard in a message from Tracy Wrend, in an effort to ensure that all students, employees and their families remain healthy and safe in the LSUU schools, the facilities team has been monitoring HVAC systems for fresh air circulation and filtration. The data accumulated during these studies show higher air quality indicators than optimal in the upper wing at SES. As a result, effective Monday, November 16, SES grades 4 and 5 will return to our original Cohort A and Cohort B split attendance schedule, with ½ of the students in attendance on Mondays and Thursdays and ½ attending on Tuesdays and Fridays. We are confident that our mitigation strategies will meet or exceed benchmarks for air quality with smaller cohort groups in these rooms.
Grant funds have been secured to cover the costs of upgrades to the unit ventilators in the upper wing classrooms, but the process of implementing these improvements may take several months. We will keep you updated as we pursue strategies to maintain air quality and return to in-person learning as quickly as possible. 4th and 5th grade parents can expect to receive an email from their child’s teacher tomorrow morning.
In the meantime, please know I realize this is a disruption to your new routine and may create logistical problems for some of our families. Rest assured, a great deal of analysis has gone into this decision and we are taking this action solely with the well-being and safety of you and your families in mind. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can answer your questions or address any concerns.
