Dear Families,

Now that our students are back to school four days a week and we have an increased opportunity to provide them with outdoor/play exploration, teachers have been creatively restructuring their lessons and expanding learning beyond the classroom walls.  We will continue to get outside as much as possible and P.E. will remain outdoors as often as is reasonable.  With colder weather and variable forecasts on the horizon, please make sure your children are adequately prepared for all kinds of weather. Proper attire, such as winter coats, ski pants, boots, gloves or mittens, hats and rain gear are all necessary to protect the children and contribute to their physical/emotional wellbeing.  If you have any difficulties providing these items for your child, please let me know and I will make every effort to secure them, with the help of our outstanding PTO and the generosity of our caring community.

On Wednesday, October 28, LSUU will be testing BrightArrow, our direct notification system. Alerts will be sent to the contact information we have on file from your yearly PowerSchool registration. It is vitally important that we have your correct information in our system so that you will receive any and all alerts.  If you have not yet done so, please immediately complete your annual registration (“Forms” in your PowerSchool parent portal). We ask that you reach out to Dot or Sue in the office if you have questions about the status of your registration, or if you need help with your username and password. The URL for the PowerSchool parent portal is

Halloween this year will look a little bit different than in past years, but the children can still enjoy a spooky good time! Individual classrooms will host their own special celebrations, so please be on the lookout for a message from your child’s teacher. Each grade level will be celebrating in a different way, with every safety protocol and procedure in place. Although we will not be doing our annual parade through the downtown area, our trick-or-treaters will gather in the field for a show of costumes.  Unfortunately, spectators will not be allowed to attend, but we will create a video and share it with our families so all can enjoy!

Episode 2 of The Magic of Music is here!  Andy Gagnon and Grace Chris explore the pleasures of Musical Theater in this enchanting presentation.  An absolute must see is the spellbinding performance by our beloved Music Teacher, Dana LaClair, of “Till There Was You.”

SES Student Council, run by elected 4th and 5th graders, will be organizing a mock election next Monday. Students in all grades will have the opportunity to vote for President, Governor and the local house senate seat. Stay tuned for the results!

On a final note, I would just like you all to know that being back at school with the children has been fabulous! We are so grateful for the cooperation of all families in assisting us with the screening process as children arrive and for your patience as we refine the pickup process upon dismissal.  I would also like to thank Lamoille Valley Transportation and their terrific bus drivers  for partnering with us since the beginning of the school year and being vigilant in ensuring that all of our students are comfortable and safe.

As always, please be in touch with me with any questions or concerns.

Nina Slade, Principal

TECH UPDATE: This year (2020-2021) we are using a new content filter for student devices. The product is called Securly. Securly is designed to block sites and content that are not suitable for school. The biggest difference students and families will see this year is since the filter is on the device, the content filtering that we use in our buildings is now applied to our devices when they are at home. Also, Securly has parental controls that we will enable and communicate more about later in the year. At this point, there is nothing parents need to do. If you have questions or technology-based issues related to Securly, you can submit a ticket to our ticket system by emailing

PHOTO RETAKE DAY: TOMORROW! October 27, 9:30 AM.  This is for any student who missed the previous photo days, any teachers or staff members, or siblings who would like to have their pictures taken together.  We have order forms in the office, just see Dot or Sue!

LUNCH MENU: Great News!  The USDA has announced that FREE meals are available to children 18 years of age and under until June 30, 2021. We are also happy to report that lunch options for children have been expanded throughout the LSUU.  There will now be a hot lunch selection (which children will pick up from the dining area, in easily transportable containers) and then return to their classroom. Lunches do not have to be ordered in advance. Please see the late October and November Lunch Menu here.

FARMERS TO FAMILIES FOOD BOX DISTRIBUTION: Through the generous support of the USDA, Lamoille South Unified Union will be hosting a Farmers to Families Food Box Distribution beginning at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, at Morristown Elementary School.

The Farmers to Families food boxes will contain fresh produce, chicken, milk and dairy products and the distribution is open to anyone needing to access food. To reduce wait times, we ask that people pre-register. We also encourage people to pick up for others who may lack transportation. Please take a moment to complete this quick registration form – thank you for your help in making this run smoothly!

Please update the dismissal plans for your child/ren in PickUp Patrol.  Bus routes have been revised and can be found on the LSUU website, the LSUU News and Announcements emailed to you, or you can click the link found here.

Now that we’ve transitioned to four days of in-school learning, default plans need to be refreshed.  Many of you have done this already and we appreciate your doing so, as it allows for a smooth dismissal process.

MESSAGES FROM THE PTO: Please click on the link below for important updates on the Wreath and Citrus Sale, the SES Family Directory and SES Spirit Wear!

Please note two important changes – online ordering has been extended until Friday, 10/30, and we will continue to accept wreath and citrus paper orders until that same date!
